Research project: Work in Times of Disruptive Technologies: Effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Work Autonomy in Germany
Subject: Sociology
Mentoring professor: Prof. Dr. Antonia Kupfer, Prof. Dr. Sabine Pfeiffer
Our working world is characterized by constant technological change, which alters working conditions and work environments. In the current scientific discourse, the potentials and effects of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of work are particularly under discussion.
AI is currently understood to be algorithmic decision systems that recognize patterns in large amounts of data. The influence of the use of AI-based systems on employees and their working conditions is still largely unknown.
Individual job autonomy is particularly important as a criterion for the quality of work. It has a significant influence on the satisfaction, well-being, creativity and performance of employees. Autonomous working in this sense means that the methods, time management and evaluation criteria for fulfilling a work task are determined independently by employees.
The analysis of the possible effects of AI on job autonomy is the core of my dissertation project. The discourse to date points to contradictory findings on the interaction of AI systems and job autonomy: On the one hand, the increasing automation of tasks can have a detrimental effect on work and thus increase job autonomy. On the other hand, AI can be used for an algorithm-based monitoring of employees, which can potentially reduce job autonomy.
The aim of the project is to identify both positive and negative effects of AI on the job autonomy of employees in order to generate the scientific basis for policy recommendations to embed AI-based systems in work environments.
