As a result of progressive innovations in the field of self-learning technologies, constellations are emerging in which algorithmic decision-making systems are taking over political and social tasks. Private and state actors equally trust the judgment of Artificial Intelligence when it comes to deciding on suitable applicants for jobs, grating credit scores, approving welfare and medical care services, or assessing the risk of recidivism of prisoners. However, numerous cases from recent years show that marginalized groups are often systematically disadvantaged by AI judgments.
From a social point of view, algorithms that make discriminatory decisions are particularly problematic. They contribute to the violation of elementary principles of our concept of social justice. When algorithms make decisions that have real consequences regarding the opportunities for participation in our society, the question arises how self-learning decision-making systems can be taught the kind of sociological knowledge that is relevant in these contexts. The dissertation project specifically deals with the question of how Artificial Intelligence must be trained in order to avoid the perpetuation of discrimination in the context of decision-making algorithms and what findings about learning processes can be derived and transferred for anti-discriminatory social work and civic education.
