The invective threat: when facts are not enough and why we can’t live without them
Democracies are at stake, right-wing populist movements are rising all over the world. Fake news, discrediting of proven facts, pejorative questioning of scientific and journalist research, humiliation and shaming are common characteristics of these developments. What role does derogatory language play in this process?
Dagmar Ellerbrock is the current Hannah Arendt Visiting Chair at the Munk School of Global Affairs. She is particularly concerned with emotions and violence, but at the same time with trust, degradation and shame rhetoric under the Nazi regime in Germany: “Weaponisation” of language.
