The past two decades have seen an unmistakable uptick in fiction with trans* or intersex characters. The entrance of trans* and intersex issues into fictional space opens up new narrative possibilities in representing characters who were, and sometimes still are, deemed hard to portray or are seen as entirely unintelligible. Using an interdisciplinary, comparative, and transnational approach, this project focusses on how fictional texts differ in their understanding of the trans* and intersex subject matter; the concepts of gender, sex, sexuality, and desire underlying these narratives; and in which way transgressions of the binary system are made visible and (un)viable.
