23.01.2025: Two guest lectures on the topic "Naples"
Lecture 1, 23.01.2025, 17:00-18:00 h
Prof. Dr. Daniela Pietrini (University of Augsburg)
"Nuvole napoletane - The Neapolitan dialect in comics and graphic novels"
The history of the artistic representation of Naples in literature, in the canzone, in film and on television has a long and successful tradition. Much less well known is the representation of Naples in comics and graphic novels, which has become increasingly relevant, especially in the third millennium. After a brief introduction to the language of comics, the lecture will focus on the representation of the southern Italian metropolis in (especially current) Italian comic culture. The focus is not on the traditionally negatively connoted narrative patterns of "typical Neapolitan" characteristics, such as the ubiquitous chaos, the - minor and major - criminality, the social misery, the countless myths hovering between religion and superstition, but on the Neapolitan dialect as an essential instrument of Neapolitan identity. The lecture will use selected examples to show how the Neapolitan dialect can become a versatile means of staging the city in comics of different genres.
Lecture 2, 23.01.2025, 18:15-19:15
Andrea Palermo (University of Osnabrück)
Naples in the movies
Naples as a film set, Naples as the birthplace or adopted home of protagonists of Italian and international cinema (from Totò to Sophia Loren, from Vittorio De Sica to Massimo Troisi, from Francesco Rosi to Paolo Sorrentino), Naples as a theme and even as a person: there are many ways to associate the city of Naples with the medium of film. Based on some of the best-known film titles, this article traces the special relationship and interaction between the city and film. Among them: L'oro di Napoli [The Gold of Naples, directed by Vittorio De Sica] (1954), Le mani sulla città [The Hands over the City, directed by Francesco Rosi] (1963), Così parlò Bellavista [Thus Spoke Bellavista, directed by Luciano De Crescenzo]: Luciano De Crescenzo] (1984), L'amore molesto [Troublesome Love, directed by Mario Martone] (1995), L'uomo in più [The Man in the Offside, directed by Paolo Sorrentino] (2001), Gomorra [Gomorrah - Journey into the Realm of the Camorra, directed by Matteo Garrone] (2008).
