"Dantes Sprachen" - Conference of the German Dante Society 2024
From October 25-27, 2024, under the title
Dantes Sprachen
this year's conference of the German Dante Society.
The German Dante Society is returning to its founding city of Dresden for its 100th annual conference. The focus of the multi-day event, which will open with a concert in the Catholic Court Church, will be on the Florence-born poet Dante Alighieri (1265- 1321), who revolutionized the way we think about language over 700 years ago.
Dante's main work, in which the poet describes how he crosses the afterlife realms of hell, purgatory and paradise while still alive, fell into the hands of the Saxon prince in 1821, at the age of 20, during a trip to Italy in Pavia. It was not least Dante's multifaceted language, his choice of the most diverse words and registers, that prompted Johann to hold regular interdisciplinary meetings at Weesenstein and Pillnitz castles to comment on and translate the Commedia. Under his patronage, the German Dante Society was founded in Dresden on September 13, 1865 with the purpose of "expanding and spreading the understanding of and love for the poet". The unveiling of a plaque at the Hotel de Saxe will commemorate the founding of the society as part of the 100th annual conference.
All lectures and the concert are open to the public. Guests are very welcome!
