AG Sensorium - Interdisciplinary Working Group for the Investigation of Sensory Perception in the Ancient World
The working group Sensorium (AG Sensorium) investigates the role the senses and sensory experience played in ancient literature and culture. Taking as a starting point the manifold ways in which life in Graeco-Roman antiquity was suffused with sensory experience, the working group’s members examine the ways in which sensory perception was a matter of discourse in different societal and medial contexts. We approach these topics from diverse perspectives and backgrounds, covering both the individual senses and any combination thereof as an object of literary and historical research. The AG Sensorium facilitates academic exchange via a range of formats spanning from regular group meetings to workshops and the organization of international conferences. In this context, we take a great interest both in broader developments concerning sensory studies, embodiment, and literary aesthetics, as well as in discussing specific hypotheses and case studies centred on the discourses on the senses in antiquity.
