Enrollment and Schedules
From WS2022/23 onwards, enrollment in all languages will be done via OPAL. Enrollment always starts on October 1 (winter semester) or April 1 (summer semester). The exact times can be found on the TUDIAS website.
Notice regarding the beginning of the semester
- The language courses start during the second week of the semester.
- Students who are not present in the 1st lesson (for courses with 2 SWS) or in the 1st and 2nd lesson (for courses with 4 SWS) have no further right to participate in the course.
Language Portfolio
Language teaching is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR describes competencies or learning objectives at six levels:
A1 - A2+ = Basic language use
B1 - B2+ = Independent language use
C1 - C2 = Proficient language use
The course level A1 is aimed at beginners with no previous knowledge of the language. With proven prior knowledge (supporting documents and/or placement tests), participation in language courses at higher levels is possible. The dates for the placement tests can be found on the OPAL page of the respective language.

Languages at the LSK
Greek can be learned in general language and in different linguistic competences on the levels A1 to B2. The focus lies on teaching methods for decoding and recoding simple, partly adapted texts up to original texts as well as on teaching skills to place the texts in their respective historical-cultural context.
Arabic can be learned at levels A1 to A2+. The focus of general language skills is on preparing students for their stay at a university. In terms of language skills, the focus is on writing, oral and written communication in everyday university and professional life.
Chinese can be learned as general language and in various linguistic competencies at levels A1 to B1+. The main focus of the general language skills is the preparation for the study-related stay at universities.
Students learn the basics of modern standard Chinese based on the Hanyu Pinyin transliteration, with special attention to the tonality of the spoken language and using the shorthand characters used in the People's Republic of China and Singapore for reading and writing skills.
Each language course is 4 SWS/semester. The teaching is realized at the East Asia Center of the TU Dresden.
Language training and examinations are certified in Chinese as UNIcert® Basis and UNIcert® I.
German can be learned as a general language as well as in various scientific languages (engineering, construction, environmental sciences and humanities) and in various linguistic competencies (academic reading, writing, presenting) at levels A1 to C1. The main focus in the teaching of general language skills is on preparing students for their study-related stay at universities. Particularly in the case of linguistic competencies, the focus is on academic writing, oral and written language in everyday university and professional life, and oral presentation for academic languages.

Japanese can be learned as a general language and in various linguistic competences at levels A1 to B1+. The focus is on general language skills in preparation for study-related stays at universities.
Students learn the basics of modern Japanese. The ability to read the three writing systems Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji is practiced in the first semester. Writing skills of the two syllabic scripts are acquired in the first two semesters, and kanji writing skills are developed each semester.

Linguistic basics and knowledge of the linguistic background of medical languages are taught. These technical language courses are aimed at students in the specific fields of study in medicine, electrical engineering, mechatronics, computer science, physics and industrial engineering.
