Due to the rapid qualitative development of generative AI systems, synthetic texts created with the help of large language models are increasingly perceived as authentic, that is, as written by human beings. However, linguistic analyses show that, compared to natural texts, synthetic texts exhibit a wide array of distinctive features.

The body of knowledge that anyone who uses tools such as ChatGPT to write in Italian – and, more generally, anyone who reads and writes texts in Italian – should possess today ought to include an overview of the main characteristics of synthetic texts produced with generative AI.

The central aim of this volume is precisely this: to provide a clear and well-documented overview of the linguistic, textual, pragmatic, and stylistic features of a new form of written Italian called synthetic Italian.
