Photo by Didier and Nadia Houénoudé - Announcement of the first event in the “5 questions for...” series as part of French Language and Francophonie Week on March 13, 2024, at the Institut français Dresden.
As part of French Language and Francophonie Week, Didier and Nadia Houénoudé took part in a “Q&A session” and told us about their home country of Benin, the languages spoken there and the ones they speak, multilingualism and interculturalism, their definition of the Francophonie, and much more!
Didier and Nadia Houénoudé have been living in Dresden for a few months. Didier Houénoudé is the Chair of History of Art at the Université d’Abomey-Calavi in Cotonou, Benin. He is currently a visiting professor at the TUD Dresden University of Technology. Didier Houénoudé has published a number of individual studies on contemporary art and historical cultural heritage in Benin, as well as on the restitution debate. He is an internationally sought-after expert on issues related to the return of cultural property to Africa and, as a member of an official delegation, accompanied the restitution of objects from the present-day Republic of Benin by France in late 2021. His areas of expertise include “Restitution of African Art and Cultural Heritage,” “History of African Architecture,” and “Contemporary African Art.” His wife, Nadia, is a trained sociologist. After initially specializing in urban population and dynamics, followed by a second specialization in spatial planning and land use, she spent about ten years at the city hall of Porto-Novo, the capital of Benin, where she was responsible for local planning and development. She has also been active in numerous feminist organizations in Benin, for which she was awarded the “femme de feu” prize in the “NGO” category in 2015.
This was the first event in the new series “5 Questions for…,” organized by the Centrum Frankreich | Frankophonie at TU Dresden, the Francophonie Dresden e.V. association, and the Institut français Dresden.
