International Panel Discussion: Remembering Colonial History: Regional, European, Global

The event was held in conjunction with the Exhibition “MENSCHENanSCHAUEN. From Glances to Actions” (Nov. 5, 2023 – July 7, 2024) at the Dresden City Museum.
Scholars and museum professionals from Germany, France, and Benin discussed the relevance of colonial history in the context of public memory.
What role does colonial history play in contemporary cultures of remembrance, and what role should it play? To what extent is remembering this history relevant to us today?
Which aspects of history are of particular interest? What forms of exhibition and presentation are appropriate? What responsibilities do historiography and public institutions bear in this context? In addressing these questions, the panel brings together regional and local perspectives with European and non-European ones.
Featuring: Prof. Dr. Nicolas Bancel (historian, France / University of Lausanne, Switzerland),Dr. Sandrine Lemaire (historian, France, Classes préparatoires aux Grandes Écoles at the Lycée Jean Jaurès in Reims), Prof. Dr. Didier Houénoudé (historian, Benin, University of Cotonou), Dr. Christina Ludwig (cultural studies scholar, Germany, Director of the Dresden City Museum).
