Obituary of Prof. Dr. Rosemarie Thiemt
The Institute of Slavic Studies at TU Dresden mourns the loss of Prof. Dr. Rosemarie Thiemt. She passed away on December 17, 2025 in Dresden. We gratefully remember the time we spent together and her work at our Institute. She will remain in our fondest memories as a highly esteemed lecturer, confidant and kind-hearted person.
Mrs. Rosemarie Thiemt was born in Dresden on 31 July 1945. After completing her A-levels, she studied to become a teacher at the Dresden University of Education and the Lomonossow University in Moscow and then initially worked in the teaching profession before taking up her position as a research assistant at the Slavic Studies section of the Dresden University of Education in 1974. There she worked in foreign language teaching and teaching Russian literary and cultural history. She deepened her academic qualifications with a doctorate in the field of Lithuanian literature. She then habilitated with a thesis on the Lithuanian novel of the 1960s and 1970s and was appointed university lecturer in 1987. Several study visits to the Soviet Union and Vilnius University in Lithuania complemented and expanded her core research areas.
After the merger of the University of Education with the TUD Dresden University of Technology, Rosemarie Thiemt was given a position as a Research Associate (Eastern European Studies - focus on Russian Studies). She taught with enthusiasm and commitment in the field of Russian regional and cultural studies, later also teaching Russian as a subject. Rosemarie Thiemt was appointed Associate Professor in 1997 and worked as Managing Director of the Institute of Slavic Studies until her retirement, where she was a highly committed student advisor and advocate for the interests of students.
Prof. Rosemarie Thiemt was a member of the Association of University Teachers of Slavic Studies, regularly reviewed Eastern European fiction in the daily press for many years and sang passionately in the Dresden Philharmonic Choir.
