Learning about the history of Czernowitz also means learning how multiculturalism can succeed - and how it can be destroyed. The former capital of Bukovina was a melting pot of different cultures, religions and languages and gave rise to a cultural coexistence and diversity that is unparalleled in the present day. What do we know today about the city that disappeared during the Second World War and the Shoah? What has been preserved? And last but not least: what can we learn from the history of Czernowitz?
The international colloquium aims to present the various facets of multicultural Chernivtsi. The thematic spectrum ranges from the 'myth of Chernivtsi' to historical and literary-historical questions dedicated to the Chernivtsi Language Conference and authors such as Rose Ausländer, Paul Celan, Edgar Hilsenrath and Gregor von Rezzori.
Renowned experts on Chernivtsi culture will speak and discuss, including Prof. Dr. Andrei Corbea-Hoisie (Iași/Vienna), Dr. Armin Eidherr (Salzburg), Dr. Kurt Scharr (Innsbruck), Prof. Dr. Jacques Lajarrige (Paris), Alexander Spiegelblatt (Tel Aviv). Chair and moderation: Prof. Dr. Walter Schmitz.
