On the initiative of Prof. Oksana Makovoz and the Ukraine Digital team, a human chain was formed in Zittau's market square on 24 August on the occasion of Ukraine's 32nd Independence Day under the motto "Free World Gathering" to demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine as well as to thank the German community for its support in difficult times.

The action, officially authorised by the city of Zittau, began at 6pm with a vote of thanks by Oksana Makovoz, in which she expressed her gratitude on behalf of the Ukrainian community for the support and solidarity of the German population. About 100 participants took part in this event and formed a human chain after Ms Makovoz's speech of thanks and a minute's silence for the victims of the Russian war of aggression, which stretched over half of Zittau's market square.
After the collective singing of the Ukrainian national anthem, the event continued in the Café Jolesch of the Hillersche Villa. There, Ukrainian food was offered and the Independence Day was festively framed with live music.
Many thanks to the city administration of Zittau for allowing the festivities and to all participants who demonstrated their solidarity with Ukraine on this day.
