Cutting-edge research on artificial voices: Sensor technology giving a voice to people who cannot speak
Researchers at TUD Dresden University of Technology are working with the medical technology company Altavo GmbH to develop an artificial voice as part of the project "SEMECO-B3: Multi-sensory non-invasive voice prosthetics using AI (MUSIK)". The Free State of Saxony is financing the collaborative project with around 3.1 million euros. Of this amount, 2.4 million euros will go to the company and around 700,000 euros to TU Dresden as a cooperation partner.
The project partners are pursuing the goal of helping those who can no longer speak as a result of laryngeal surgery to regain their own natural-sounding voice. The non-invasive sensor technology can detect and characterize silent speech movements. The latest deep neural networks instantly transform these signals into audible speech. "Non-invasive" is the technology developed by Altavo, which allows the sensors to be placed on the surface of the skin and does not require insertion into the body.
The medical technology company Altavo GmbH, founded in 2021, is implementing the project "SEMECO-B3: Multi-sensory non-invasive voice prosthetics using AI (MUSIK)" alongside scientific partners from the Saxon future cluster SEMECO. Among them are the Chair of Speech Technology and Cognitive Systems, the Chair of Radio Frequency and Photonics Engineering and the Institute of Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology (ITM) at TU Dresden.
About SEMECO future cluster
In 2021/22, TU Dresden successfully participated in the second round of the future cluster competition "Clusters4Future" of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with the project SEMECO (Secure Medical Microsystems and Communications). The BMBF is funding SEMECO with up to 45 million euros.
