Prof. Gerhard P. Fettweis Receives the 2027 IEEE Eric E. Sumner Award

Prof. Gerhard P. Fettweis, holder of the Vodafone Chair of Mobile Communications Systems at TU Dresden, has been awarded the 2027 IEEE Eric E. Sumner Award , one of the highest honors bestowed by the IEEE.

The IEEE Eric E. Sumner Award is presented to an individual or a team of up to three people and recognizes outstanding contributions to communications technology. The award is sponsored by Nokia Bell Labs. The award will be presented at the IEEE Technical Field Awards Luncheon and the kickoff of IEEE Awards Week on May 5, 2027, in New York City.

About the Recipient:
Prof. Gerhard P. Fettweis was born in Wilrijk, Belgium. He studied electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1990. Since 1994, he has held the Vodafone Chair of Mobile Communications Systems at TU Dresden. Fettweis coordinated the Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed), a Cluster of Excellence. Since 2014, he has been the coordinator of the interdisciplinary 5G Lab at TU Dresden. Since 2018, he has also served as the founding scientific director and managing director of the Barkhausen Institute, a nonprofit limited liability company (GmbH) with core funding from the Free State of Saxony. He is a member of the Leopoldina and Acatech.
