Election of Prof. Gerhard Fettweis to the National Academy of Engineering (USA)
Prof. Gerhard P. Fettweis, holder of the Vodafone Chair of Mobile Communications Systems at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at TU Dresden, has been elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), Class of 2024. Election to the US NAE is one of the highest professional honors an engineer can receive. NAE members are among the most knowledgeable engineering experts in the country and have distinguished themselves in business and academic management, in technical positions, as university professors, and as leaders in government and private engineering organizations. Prof. Fettweis is being honored in particular for his innovations in wireless networking and entrepreneurship. This year, the prestigious honor has only gone to a representative of a German university.
"I feel very honored by this high distinction for our work from my mother's country (USA), which of course would not have been possible without the support of my entire team at TU Dresden over the last 30 years," emphasizes Prof. Fettweis.
Membership of the National Academy of Engineering honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice or education, including significant contributions to engineering literature. They have often pioneered new and evolving fields of technology, contributed to significant advances in traditional areas of engineering, or helped develop or implement innovative approaches to engineering education. The election of the new NAE members is the culmination of a year-long process.
The newly elected members will be formally inducted during the NAE Annual Meeting on September 29, 2024. The list of new members and international members, with their primary affiliations at the time of election and a brief description of their key engineering accomplishments, can be viewed here: https://www.nae.edu/312025/NAENewClass2024
