Profile of the IBMT
Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering principles and rules to the field of medicine. It combines research results from the field of engineering with those of medicine in the various clinical application areas. The success of biomedical engineering research therefore depends directly on the interdisciplinarity of the disciplines involved.
Engineering sciences are traditionally very strongly represented at the Technische Universität Dresden. The direct connection with the Medical Faculty "Carl Gustav Carus" and the University Hospital thus provides optimal conditions for biomedical engineering research and teaching. This close connection is also manifested in the research profile lines of the Technische Universität Dresden, which are essentially characterised by the umbrella terms medicine, technology and society.
The four working groups of the Institute have their methodological focus on the application of primarily electrotechnical procedures for medicine:
- Medical measurement technology and biosignal processing
- Automation technology and robotics
- Mechatronics and systems engineering
- Medical imaging and image processing
- Machine learning and artifical intelligence in medical science
There are also close links to health economics and health services research.
A special focus is the development of out-of-hospital medical technology, which is intended to provide relevant solutions in the context of demographic, health care and information technology changes. In this context, the research areas of preventive medicine, surveillance and monitoring, ambient assisted living and telemedicine belong.
