€130,000 in prize money for the best student theses at TU Dresden
For 13 years, the Gisela and Erwin Sick Foundation has supported TU Dresden students with prestigious awards, carrying a total annual prize purse of €10,000.
On June 25, 2026, Prof. Nils Modler, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs at TU Dresden, opened the award ceremony at the Rectorate.
Wolfgang Bay, member of the Foundation’s board and former Head of Research at Sick AG (Freiburg), spoke about the Foundation’s commitment to fostering the next generation of talent.
Prof. Juergen Czarske moderated the event, which was organized in collaboration with Dr. Eric Starke from Endress+Hauser SICK GmbH+Co. KG (Ottendorf-Okrilla).
The four award winners are:
Dr.-Ing. Clemens Bilsing
Dissertation: 3D localization microscopy with real-time adaptive optics correction for multiphase microfluidic flows
Dr.-Ing. Simon Oster
Dissertation: Suitability of in-situ thermographic process monitoring for predicting local porosity via machine learning in powder-bed-based metal melting
Maarten Mittmann
Master's Thesis: Dendritic Polymer Fiber Networks in Free-Standing Films for Infrasound Sensing
Bowen Yang
Diploma Thesis: Reference-less Digital Optical Phase Conjugation for Information Transmission through Multimode Fibers
More than 50 guests gathered in the Bärengarten for a networking event with numerous students. The organizer, Juergen Czarske, was delighted to bring together students from his courses and guests from the award ceremony.
