Fascination with laser sensors - Magical experimental show at Long Night of Science in Dresden
The team led by Prof. Juergen Czarske once again proved to be a crowd puller during the Long Night of Science on June 26, 2026 in Dresden.
Prof. J. Czarske Light polarisation
Although only three “magical” laser experiment shows were originally planned – at 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. – due to popular demand, the fascinating experiments were shown again at 9:45 p.m.
In addition to a portable rainbow, *Star Wars* lightsabers (Darth Vader vs Luke Skywalker), the use of lasers by James Bond, and a magical aquarium, a magical column to demonstrate the clockwise polarization of sugar water met with great interest. A total of 84 participants attended our event ‘The Fascination of Laser Sensors’.
Demonstration with lightsabers
The demonstration showed color changes caused by the optical activity of sugar water - an effect that can also be observed with clockwise yoghurt. Cutting-edge developments – such as optogenetics (enabling blind people to see again), the combination of holography and deep learning, and the “second quantum revolution” (quantum imaging and communication) – captivated the audience.
