JELIA 2023 at the Faculty of Computer Science
The prestigious JELIA 2023 conference made its comeback after two years, and was held this year at TU Dresden from September 20-22. JELIA is a well-known international conference focusing on areas of logic-based artificial intelligence, such as knowledge representation and logical reasoning. "We were very excited to host JELIA 2023 here at TU Dresden," commented General Chair Sarah Gaggl. "We couldn't wait to bring together experts* from all over the world!"
In addition to a number of exciting talks, the four keynotes in particular provided interesting insights into a wide variety of areas of logic-based artificial intelligence. Among the invited keynote speakers was Professor Franz Baader of TU Dresden, who opened the conference with his talk on approaches to ontology repair. Katie Atkinson (University of Liverpool) discussed at the end of the first day how symbolic and machine learning can be combined for the purpose of automating logical reasoning in a legal framework. The following day, Vaishak Belle (University of Edinburgh) took an excursion into the shallows of predicate logic and probability. Finally, on the last day, Mario Alviano (Università della Calabria) presented a novel Datalog system.
Conferences are often remembered for experiences far removed from technical aspects. JELIA 2023 took the 95 participants to the Dresden Museum of Transport, which not only generated enthusiasm with its exhibitions, but will also be remembered as the venue for the banquet. The JELIA puzzle, which was designed and created in advance by Elisa Böhl (TU Dresden), will certainly remain unforgettable. Each participant was presented with a puzzle at the beginning of the conference. Those who could show a correct solution in the course of the conference also received a certificate. Fortunately, the puzzling was limited to the coffee breaks, where it provided for a lively social exchange.
Last but not least, it should be mentioned that not only the organization is due to the ICCL, the ICCL was also represented with some contributions at JELIA 2023; among them Bartosz Bednarczyk, who fortunately received the Best Student Paper Award for the second time in a row with his paper.
