Smart Cities and Human-Computer-Interaction: Project launch of the 6G-Life Research Hub in Dresden
“6G-life” marks the start of a new research hub at Technische Universität Dresden and the Technical University Munich. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has been funding the project since August 15, 2021. The goal is to advance the research and development of mobile communication, quantum communication and artificial intelligence. On the occasion of the project launch, the Minister President of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer, and a research delegation from Singapore gained an insight into the current research.
“Congratulations to Frank Fitzek and the team! I am delighted about the start of the 6G-life research hub right here at TU Dresden. TUD is one of only four locations in Germany where this research is being conducted. This shows once again the excellent position of TUD in the field of digitalization – not only in terms of hardware and software development but also in terms of communications technology,” said TUD Rector Ursula M. Staudinger in her speech.
With 6G, the focus is on human communication, interaction with computers and with the digital world. System security and resilience as well as reducing latency in data transmission are major research focuses of 6G-life. The funding and development of startups is an additional priority of the project.
“Humans will always be the source of innovation and will teach computers how to complete complex or repetitive tasks. 6G is the foundation for this advancement. We want to give people tangible examples of how we can improve on our co-existence,” Prof. Franz H.P. Fitzek elaborated at the inauguration of the research hub on August 20 at the Barkausen Building located on the TUD campus.
Scientists from various disciplines such as electrical and computer engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, psychology and medicine are actively involved in the 6G-life research hub. A total of 140 new job positions have been created at the two Universities of Excellence.
With today’s inauguration of the 6G-Life hub, Germany is establishing itself at the forefront of technological development to help shape the next technological leap in human-machine interaction.
