Advisor's Agreement
First, read our guide for student work. It is available to you as a PDF document and as an HTML document.
In the initial phase of working on your task, the following fixed dates have been assigned to you:
- 1 week after starting work: Joint discussion of strategic approach and time management
- 3 weeks after starting work: First joint consolidation of content-related topics (related work, basic concept, implementation, etc.)
- 5 weeks after starting work: This meeting will take place with Prof. Dr. Gumhold. You will present your completed steps and your planning (verbally, about 10 minutes). After that, a brief discussion based on this foundation will take place. Prepare thoroughly for the meeting to be able to clarify any content-related questions. The conversation serves to focus on your tasks and concepts. Even though we do not wish it for any student, this meeting is the last opportunity to discuss a formal withdrawal as part of a Bachelor's or Diploma Thesis.
- Only for Master's Thesis: 7 weeks after starting work: Strategic discussion on further progress. Even though we do not wish it for any student, this meeting is the last opportunity to discuss a formal withdrawal as part of a Master's Thesis.
All further personal meetings with your supervisor are possible by individual arrangement. In addition, there is always the possibility to ask for information by email.
Approximately halfway through the processing time, the intermediate presentation takes place (only for Bachelor's/Master's/Diploma thesis and "Großer Beleg", see Chapter 11.1 in the guide for student work). Upon request, your supervisor will give you feedback on the presentation slides.
We offer you the opportunity to thoroughly read one chapter of your choice from your work once, in order to point out weaknesses in wording (scientific language), handling of sources, figures or mathematical symbols. Please take advantage of this opportunity as early as possible during your work! This can effectively save you later effort in correction.
In addition to detailed feedback on a (partial) chapter, we offer you the chance to give feedback on the entire work once (please allow one week for processing). To have enough time for correction, we recommend that you submit the current state of your work at least 3 weeks before the deadline. This way, you will receive the overall feedback from us 2 weeks before the deadline. In contrast to detailed feedback, we will validate the fulfillment of the task, the structure of the work, and the distribution of the text amounts to the individual chapters.
If you find that you cannot submit on time due to unforeseeable circumstances, you have the option of extending the processing time. The following should be noted:
- For Bachelor's/Master's or Diploma Theses, the maximum extensions are set by the examination regulations: for Bachelor's, a maximum of 6 weeks, for Master's/Diploma a maximum of 13 weeks. They must be formally requested and justified before the examination board. The application must be submitted at least two weeks before the regular submission deadline.
- For all other types of work, send an (informal) email to Prof. Dr. Gumhold at least two weeks before the regular submission deadline, in which you request an extension. The extension can only be taken once and may not exceed the processing delay caused by unforeseeable circumstances. However, it can last for a maximum of half the regular processing time.
After submitting the written work, the work will be evaluated. You will receive the evaluations promptly so that you can prepare for the defense. At this point, your supervisor will also give you feedback on the slides, upon request.
