ABSCHIEDSVORLESUNG ("The Last Lecture")
My greatest thanks go to the TUD, the faculty, and my students - It was a wonderful period of my life.
Prof. Dr. Frank J. Furrer
Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) consist of software-controlled computing devices communicating with each other and interacting with the physical world through sensors and actuators. Typical examples are a water treatment plant, an unmanned aerial vehicle, a heart pacemaker, or an autonomous vehicle. Because most of the functionality is implemented in software, the software is of crucial importance for the safety and security of the CPS.
As software engineering becomes disciplined and mature, generally accepted principles governing the safety and security of CPSs have emerged. These proven principles are the foundation for the construction and operation of safe and secure CPSs. Violating these principles may render possible safety accidents or enable security incidents.
The participants will learn a number of these principles and apply them to a real safety accident or security incident of a CPS. Their findings will be presented in a tutorial paper and a presentation to their peers.
A flyer for the Hauptseminar 2023 can be downloaded here.
The timetable is as follows:
Petri Net Workshop 04.05.2023
The first task of the Hauptseminar is the research of either a severe safety accident or a grave security incident from the rich choice on the Internet. The accident or incident is then analyzed, and the cause is identified, thus discovering which safety or security principles have been ignored or violated.
The analysis, results, and recommendations are then formulated as a research paper and explained to the participants of the Hauptseminar in a slide presentation.
Successful completion of the Hauptseminar is credited with 3 ECTS credits. A grade will be assigned, which is averaged from the research paper, the oral presentation, and the final oral exam.
The course can be used for the modules specified by the department: here. Students with other exam regulations can attend the Hauptseminar in a passive role but will not earn ECTS credits.
Important Note: The Hauptseminar is restricted to 6 participants. Please register via jExam or directly at frank.j.furrer@bluewin.ch. The closing date for registration is Tuesday, April 11, 2023.
If you have questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Frank J. Furrer directly at frank.j.furrer@bluewin.ch.
