Abstract: Modern robotic platforms are increasingly complex due to incorporating various heterogeneous sensors and several actuators generating data at large frequencies. They are mostly based on embedded computers but relying on software solutions not entirely suited for parallel processing. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are an ideal candidate to solve this issue due to their intrinsic parallel architecture, enhancing those systems’ computing capabilities while still being programmable. It is possible to find partial contributions in the state-of-the-art but a study of FPGAs as a whole for robotic applications is missing in the literature. Therefore, this Ph.D. work focuses on answering which components are needed for an FPGA-based design for robotic applications and how to describe such design in an abstract (as a model) and a generalizable way to adapt it accordingly to the targeted application or its middleware. For this, we propose a holistic model-based workflow that takes only a system’s specification to generate components to manage accelerators, their behavior, and interfaces to several middlewares.
