Research by the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering on microscrews to be featured on August 23 on “Sendung mit der Maus”
The research conducted by the Chair of Joining Technology and Assembly will be featured on Sunday, August 23, in an educational segment of “Sendung mit der Maus.” The episode will air at 9:30 a.m. on ARD and at 11:30 a.m. on KIKA. The segment focuses on the question of how smartphones can be better repaired and recycled. To that end, the production team from FLASH Filmproduktion visited TUD in June.
Cell phones consist of many individual components that must be reliably connected to one another. At the same time, the devices should be as easy as possible to disassemble at the end of their service life in order to recover valuable raw materials. Researchers at the Chair of Joining Technology and Assembly are investigating micro-screws and the corresponding screw connections. These tiny mechanical components, with an outer diameter of no more than 2.5 millimeters, play a crucial role in the assembly of modern electronic devices. They can reliably and multifunctionally connect even the smallest components in a smartphone while also facilitating later disassembly, repair, and, consequently, recycling.
“The ability to more easily disassemble electronic devices at the end of their service life and return valuable components to the recycling loop—or significantly improve their repairability throughout their lifecycle—is an important contribution to resource conservation,” explains Prof. Hans Christian Schmale, head of the Chair. “I am very pleased that, through the educational segment on ‘Sendung mit der Maus,’ we can introduce our research to a broad audience—and especially to young people.”
