Harald Lesch, Wolfgang Ehlers and Artifacts from Art to Science. The Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics invites visitors to TU Dresden.

From May 30 to June 2, TU Dresden will host the largest conference for applied mathematics and mechanics in Germany – the annual meeting of the Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM). Up to 1,200 participants are expected to attend. The meeting’s varied program of presentations  will paint a picture of current developments in Computational Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Analysis, Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computing. It is an opportunity for a large, interdisciplinary network of researchers to meet and hear expert lectures, take part in discussions, and develop new ideas. The event takes place each year at a different location in Germany or elsewhere in Europe.

This year, GAMM has reason to celebrate – it was founded 100 years ago in Dresden. The development it has undergone in this time is astounding. Prof. Wolfgang Ehlers from Stuttgart will shine the light on this journey in his keynote speech “100 Years of GAMM: Motivation, History and Achievements” (“100 Jahre GAMM: Motivation, Historie und Errungenschaften”). The speech is open to the public and will take place on Thursday, June 1 at 8:00 pm in the Audimax at TU Dresden’s Auditorium Center (Bergstraße 64). The event will be rounded off by music from members of the Sächsische Staatskapelle – the state orchestra based in Dresden.

Another highlight of this year’s GAMM annual meeting is the public lecture held by Prof. Harald Lesch. Entitled “What does the universe have to do with me?” (“Was hat das Universum mit mir zu tun?”), it will take the audience on a trip through empirical, quantitative science relating to cosmos, matter, space and time. The lecture will take place on Friday, June 2 at 8:00 pm in the Audimax at TU Dresden’s Auditorium Center (Bergstraße 64). If demand is high, the lecture will be streamed into a second lecture hall.

To accompany the meeting, the public exhibition “100 Years of GAMM – a scientific art exhibition” (100 Jahre GAMM – eine wissenschaftliche Kunstausstellung”) will display artifacts from scientific and artistic collections at TU Dresden, selected artworks created by artists from the region and abroad, as well as installations that merge science and technology. The items on display have been specially selected to connect applied mathematics and mechanics in a historical perspective. Visitors will have the chance to find out how artificial intelligence interprets this connection, how symmetry and phase transitions inspire works of art, and how geometric objects change collectively. There will also be an opportunity to interact with a fluid structure as well as moving models of mechanisms and gear units that bring science to life. From historical computation machines to a new Adventureland Mathematics exhibit, there will be plenty of science to view and opportunities to encounter key figures who have left their mark on GAMM as well as scientists who are still doing this today. The exhibition will be open during the conference in the Auditorium Center, Room 304. On June 1 at 7:00 pm, there will be a reception with tours of the gallery and some of the artists will be in attendance.
