24.10.2023 – Kids University

On October 24, 2023, we welcomed the 3b class from Brockwitz elementary school to our Kids University. At this event, which takes place at regular intervals, Prof. Brosius explains forming technology in everyday life to the primary school pupils using various examples.

After a short lecture on the topic in question we went to our test area in the von-Mises-Bau. There the laser and punching machine (TruMatic 1000) was used to cut out the shape of a spoon from sheet metal and engrave the child's name. The children then used the hand spindle press to shape the sheet metal into a finished spoon themselves.

To introduce the students to forging, Prof. Brosius tried to bend a cold round steel with a hammer on an anvil. Which, according to Noah, could never work without Hulk's powers. So the round steel had to go into the oven and was heated to 1000°C. Now the hammer could be swung again to shape the round steel.

Finally, we demonstrated industrial deep drawing on our servomechanical press. The weight of 10 full-grown elephants is used here, Karlotta was quite astonished to discover. Afterwards, everyone had lunch in the canteen before heading back home to Brockwitz.
