tryING 2026 - Introductory Program in Engineering Sciences
Creativity builds connections—with this in mind, high school seniors gained insights into the engineering sciences at the Institute of Manufacturing Technology. As part of the annual “tryING” trial study program at TU Dresden, one of the many workshops took place on August 14, 2026. In the tryING program, interested high school seniors participate in university life and experience the day-to-day life of a female engineer.
The day began with a short lecture designed to cover the subfields of manufacturing engineering and the theoretical fundamentals of joining technology. This was followed by the presentation of a hands-on assignment that included a problem to solve.
The participants were tasked with creating a joint between steel and copper using welding, soldering, and adhesive bonding, testing the joint for strength, and evaluating the methods. Together, they formulated hypotheses and discussed potential solutions. Subsequently, the selected joining methods were carried out in various laboratories, analyzed, the results evaluated, and a solution presented.
During the workshop, the participants also had the opportunity to ask a former student at TU Dresden questions about her academic experience. The day concluded with positive feedback from the participants: “It was enriching to gain practical insight and see just how diverse manufacturing engineering and the related tasks are. In addition to the technical aspects, we also felt comfortable on a personal level.”
This underscores the importance of engaging with high school students to recruit college students. The Institute of Manufacturing Technology remains committed to promoting STEM education! We look forward to welcoming our new students for the 2026–27 winter semester.
