On September 15, 2026, former colleagues of Werner Boie gathered at TUD Dresden University of Technology to reflect on their time working together and gain insights into current research on the occasion of his 125th birthday .
The gathering focused on personal conversations and memories of their time together. During tours of the laboratory and the Center for Energy Technology, the guests also learned about current research areas and the latest developments in energy technology at TU Dresden.
Werner Boie and His Work in Dresden
In 1950, Werner Boie assumed the Chair of Thermal Engineering and Thermal Management at what was then the Technical University of Dresden. Over the following 16 years, he had a decisive influence on research and teaching. His scientific focus was particularly on the fields of combustion and combustion calculations. Through his research and his book *From Fuel to Flue Gas*, he made important contributions to thermal and power plant engineering that were recognized far beyond Dresden.
His legacy is evident not only in his scientific publications but also in the training of early-career researchers: approximately 500 students graduated during his tenure as a university professor.

A legacy that continues to this day
The connection to Werner Boie’s scientific legacy is also reflected in the Werner Boie Prize, which has been awarded since 2011 as part of the Power Plant Technology Colloquium . The award recognizes outstanding work by early-career researchers in the field of power plant engineering each year.
The gathering on September 15 highlighted just how closely scientific tradition and personal connections are intertwined. In addition to reflecting on their shared work, the exchange offered an opportunity to learn about developments at TU Dresden and to reconnect with old acquaintances.
The gathering served as a reminder that the history of science is shaped not only by publications and research findings, but above all by the people who shape and carry it forward.
