CONCEPTION OF THE CHAIR FOR „ENERGY PROCESS ENGINEERING“
AT THE INSTITUTE OF POWER ENGINEERING AT THE FACULTY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
AT DRESDEN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
The Chair for „Combustion, Heat and Mass Transfer“ at the institute for Energy Engineering is above all associated with high temperature processes of energy conversion in power plant technology, as well as with basic industry.
There are currently about 30 employees in four research areas:
Research area Head of the research area
- Fuel technology and characterization Dr. rer. nat. Kathrin Gebauer
- Power plant technology Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Grahl
- Technology of bioenergy / Thermal waste treatment Dr.-Ing. Dorith Böhning
- High-temperature process technology Dr.-Ing. Simon Unz
Our employees work on research and development projects in the fields of efficient conversion and use of energy, fuel characterization, corrosion control - especially in steam generators -, as well as pollution reduction by primary and secondary measures in pyrolysis reactions, gasification and combustion processes. Belonging to the research and development projects, lectures focus on basic studies of thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, and on main course, particularly of combustion and power plant technology.
Laboratory units, pilot and laboratory plants are available for the various research projects. Besides the experimental investigations, there is mathematical modeling of pyrolysis, gasification and combustion processes in different devices, and of mass and heat transfer processes, as well as of gas cleaning systems being made.
The results of our research are constantly put into practice by a close collaboration between us and plant engineering companies and operators. These include such projects as research on oxyfuel processes for coal-fired power plants, on-line balancing and heat flow measurement at biomass power stations and waste incineration plants.
Furthermore, our department organizes the “Kraftwerkstechnisches Kolloquium" (conference on power plant technology) and the "Berliner Abfallwirtschafts- und Energiekonferenz" (waste management and energy conference in Berlin).
