Congratulations on the defense of Yichi Zhang's diploma thesis
On February 01, 2024, Yichi Zhang successfully defended his diploma thesis entitled “Experimental investigation of foam flow through a nozzle” at our Chair of Transport Processes at Interfaces.
Using optical imaging, the experimental investigation aimed for first flow measurements with the newly constructed foam experiment, serving as preparatory work for further investigations using other measurement techniques. A simple but practical measurement setup was used, consisting of the foam experiment, a CMOS camera for image acquisition and an LED spotlight for illumination. Through the transparent side wall of the nozzle, the foam bubbles in the flow close to the wall were recorded. To analyse the image data and determine the flow velocity and its components, the principle of the established "Particle Image Velocimetry" (PIV) method was adapted and applied to the foam images. For this purpose, the PIVlab tool in MATLAB was used. The measurements and analysis covered an extensive parameter space: the velocity field of the foam flow was determined and discussed for three different nozzle sizes, each as a divergent and convergent nozzle, with three different foam bubble sizes and under variation of the superficial gas velocity.
