Ceramic Materials

The lecture is held in the 4th semester in conjunction with a practical training. It provides an overview on the structure and properties of ceramic high-performance materials. This includes the physical and chemical basics of material behavior, manufacturing processes, and examples of materials with primarily constructive (structural ceramics) or primarily functional (functional ceramics) applications, as well as current trends. Beyond the materials themselves, some exemplary ceramic systems are examined to develop an understanding of the complete value chain, from material to product.

Processing-Microstruc­tures-Properties of Ceramic Materials

The lecture “Processing-microstructures-properties of ceramic materials” is held in the fifth semester. It deals in depth with selected questions of ceramic materials and technologies, e.g. the synthesis, manufacture and processing of oxide and non-oxide ceramics, as well as the design and shaping of ceramic components and methods of analysis and characterization.

Ceramic Functional Materials

The structure and properties of technologically relevant functional ceramics (dielectrics, ferroelectrics, piezoelectrics, resistors, conductors) are covered during the 8th semester. The manufacturing processes of materials, components and systems are represented with regard to their application. Some examples of such applications are, in particular, substrates, capacitors, varistors, thermistors, sensors, actuators, piezocomposites, microsystems and energy converters.

Range of Lectures

The Chair of Inorganic Non-metallic Materials (ANW) provides the following lectures as part of the Materials Science course of studies.

  • Ceramic materials and practical training for the 4th semester material science + part of the lecture "High performance materials" for VNT (summer semester)
  • Processes-microstructures-properties of ceramic materials for the 5th semester (winter semester)
  • Functional ceramic materials for the 8th semester (summer semester)

Furthermore, a joint lecture with the Chair of Powder Metallurgy, Sintering, and Composite Materials is offered:

  • Energy engineering materials for the 9th semester material science (winter semester)

Additional lectures are organized for the courses of studies of the Faculties of Mechanical Science and Engineering and Chemical Process Engineering, respectively:

  • Lecture “Electrolysis, fuel cell systems and PtX” (Dr. M. Jahn)
