Fuse wires
Metallographic investigation of fuse wires used in low voltage high power fuse applications
Low voltage high power fuse applications in modern energy networks are subject to an ever increasing thermal load, which can lead to an accelerated deterioration of the fuse wire. The relevant deterioration process is the temperature dependent interdifussion between the fuse wire and solder connection (figure 1). In the frame of this joint project an investigation will be made of the long-term behaviour of fuse wires upon temperature and time. In addition, a comparison will be made of the material properties of the fuse wire and solder in their original state with the changes caused by the aging process. The emphasis of the work at the IFWW is on the metallographic microstructure investigations.
