The foci of this work group are highly innovative aerospace propulsion systems. Our research topics include miniaturised electric drives (miniaturised ion thrusters, field-emission electric propulsion FEEP) for high-precision position control applications (e.g. for formation flying). With our novel concepts and ideas, we also challenge the limits of what is technically feasible. We are testing revolutionary new approaches ("breakthrough propulsion physics").

We develop and operate satellite systems and scientific experiments for satellites and space stations in the extremely exciting field of tension between new developments from physics, materials science and the challenging conditions in space. This field of research includes the scientific investigation and development of critical technologies for space transportation between Earth, space and other celestial bodies. The focus lies on innovative chemical propulsion systems, with world-leading expertise in the field of additively manufactured aerospike engines for thrust levels between 1 N and 30 kN. Another research focus is on in-situ resource utilization (ISRU), which plays a central role in future space concepts and can be used to produce propellant for missions on the moon or Mars.
