Fascinating insights into the world of sheet metal processing and Industry 4.0
This summer semester brought an exciting opportunity to our students: As part of the course "Design and Control of Pneumatic Drives" they delved into the world of laser cutting technology, thanks to an excursion to the ultramodern laser cutting machines at Trumpf Sachsen located in Neukirch, Lausitz.
The students gained detailed insights into the fundamental components of these machines. They were introduced not only to pneumatically operated drive systems and vacuum suction grippers for the safe handling of sheet metals but also deepened their understanding of the design of such drive and vacuum systems, a central theme of the course. In addition to a presentation of Trumpf's diverse product range, the students immersed themselves in the processing and handling of sheet metal. These processes range from storing sheet metal coils with diameters of several meters, to precisely cutting pieces in a matter of seconds. The application of sophisticated vacuum systems for material extraction from the sheet metal was equally impressive. These processes are supported by state-of-the-art digital systems, enabling comprehensive plant monitoring, automated commissioning and other elements of Industry 4.0.
Our heartfelt thanks go to the experts at Trumpf for providing extremely informative insights into these operational processes. A special appreciation is owed to Mr. Marcus Busch, the Head of Development, who diligently prepared the excursion and provided us with valuable insights into the world of sheet metal processing. Trumpf's significant presence in Lausitz opens up exciting opportunities for our students and graduates from the TUD. A wide range of possibilities, from practical topics for study and thesis projects to promising career paths, awaits.
