Excursion to Palfinger Platforms GmbH in Löbau
Every winter semester, as part of the module Fluid Mechatronics in Mobile Applications, we offer an excursion for our students, most of whom are in the 9th semester of the mechanical engineering and mechatronics diploma programs. This time we had the opportunity to visit the production facilities of Palfinger Platforms GmbH in Löbau.
Along with a presentation on the diversity of Palfinger AG's product range and aerial work platforms in particular, we were able to discuss mobile hydraulic drive systems, components and control functions in detail. Moreover, we were able to gain an insight into the value chain from steel construction to the finished product during a tour of the factory. As a highlight, we were even allowed to test two products on the yard in wintry weather. And in doing so, we clearly noticed: Even for smaller platforms with 22m or 30m height, it requires high engineering skills to control the basket position in a user-friendly way, to hold it against wind loads and to ensure the stability against tipping. In this way, even people who have a respect for height get a safe feeling in the basket. Because this is necessary at the latest with the largest Palfinger platform with a maximum height of 90m.
In addition to the team on site, the excursion was supported in particular by the chief engineer Mr. Dominic Ulrich, who traveled from Krefeld, and Mr. Fabian Bessing, a former graduate of our chair and now a development engineer for hydraulic systems at Palfinger in Köstendorf/Austria. We would like to thank them very much for the many exciting and very informative insights into engineering at Palfinger.
With the massive expansion of the Löbau plant, Palfinger is sending a strong signal for the Oberlausitz. And this also benefits the students and graduates of the TUD: Why go far? Interesting topics for student research projects/diploma theses or job offers are also available here in the region.
