A.Schmidt: Magnetomechanical coupling of single domain particles in viscoelastic polymer matrices for actuation and as nanorheological probes
Description
The fundamental knowledge of the interaction between a polymer matrix and dispersed particles on the length scale of their interface is essential to control the properties of composite materials.
For this purpose a toolbox of hybrid materials is developed and analyzed consisting of different polymer matrices filled with nanoscopic magnetic tracers or actuators. The aspired particle-polymer systems exhibit a broad range of (dynamical) crosslinking in the polymer component, as well as different coupling mechanisms between the particles and the polymer segments. We employ (elongated) one-domain-particles and poly(ethylene oxide) solutions or gels. The magneto-mechanical properties of the materials can be varied between predominantly elastic gels and viscous fluids with the full viscoelastic spectrum accessible. Modification of the particle surface is used to tailor the interactions between particles and polymer matrix. The particles can be immobilized either physically or chemically in the polymer system.
Consequently, the particles serve on the one hand as tracers for magnetomechanical coupling on the nanometer scale, and on the other hand as actuators for the field-regulated manipulation of the material properties.
