Th.Wallmersperger: Modeling and finite element simulation of the chemo-magneto-mechanic behaviour of magnetic polymer gels
Description
The goal of the research project is to better understand the processes occurring inside the polymer gels by modeling and simulation of their (chemo-)magneto-mechanical behaviors. In addition, we seek to facilitate the description of the proposed material as actuators for a possible use in medical engineering or in microelectronic, etc. In this regard, the interaction of the magnetic particles with an externally applied magnetic field, the effect of the magnetic particles on the magnetic field in the hydrogel, as well as the interaction of the particles with the polymer network and the resulting mechanical deformation of the gel, will be investigated in detail. In summary, depending on the applied magnetic field, the resulting deformation of the gel, and the attainable restoring forces for example of a hydrogel actuator will be determined.
In the framework of the project the modeling of the magneto-mechanical behavior will be carried out using the finite element method.
A review and further development of the present formulation will be carried out based on fundamental magneto-mechanical test cases for magneto-sensitive materials in general and magnetic polymergels in particular. By transferring the microscale material parameters using homogenization methods, the local properties can be brought to the macroscale.
In summary, the findings on the microscale can be transferred to the macroscale, and the quality of the developed formulation can be constantly improved. Thus, by performing (numerical) finite element studies, it will be possible to gain lots of promising information towards the optimization of the hydrogel actuators for possible applications.
