Special report in the Sächsische Zeitung: Shaping structural change - TUD | Lusatia Campus

The coal age is slowly drawing to a close in Germany. This means that there are challenging times ahead for the regions tasked with adapting to this structural change. They need allies in politics, business, science, and, of course, society.

Apart from the Ruhr region in North Rhine-Westphalia, the central German mining district and Lusatia are now facing these fundamental challenges. By financing and establishing two large-scale research centers on astrophysics (Lusatia) and the chemistry of the future (central German mining district), fundamental research is to be transformed into groundbreaking technologies, start-ups and other business collaborations with SMEs, in order to develop the regions into sustainable and innovative centers with desirable work opportunities.

Education, and by extension science, is the key to driving this change. In addition to supporting the German Center for Astrophysics, TU Dresden is involved in a wide range of projects in Lusatia - linked by the decentralized TUD | Lusatia Campus. Energy, mobility, circular economy and social change are the central topics.

The current special report by TU Dresden in the Sächsische Zeitung presents two projects in more detail: the Smart Mobility Lab, which is being constructed near Hoyerswerda and addresses the topic of mobility from multiple angles, as well as Landnetz, a research project particularly dedicated to the future of agriculture.
