Forming of Fiber-Based Materials
Our research group is dedicated to researching the forming of natural fiber-based materials - from both a fundamental and application-oriented perspective. The focus is on the complex interactions between process, material and machine, because we are convinced that an in-depth understanding of the process is the basis for innovative solutions.
Our goal is the further development of forming technologies for natural fiber-based materials. Through process-side approaches and a comprehensive understanding of materials, we want to master the challenges posed by the complex behavior of these materials during forming. A central aspect of our work is the close link between process-specific material properties and technical implementation. Through the interaction of material understanding, process development and machine concepts, tailor-made solutions for different applications can be realized
Our research spectrum covers a wide range of natural fiber-based materials, with a particular focus on cardboard materials, dry and wet nonwovens and macroalgae. We rely on the following technologies:
- 3D forming technologies for the production of cups and trays (drawing and compression molding)
- Embossing processes with ultrasonic support for structuring materials in a targeted manner
- Optical and mechanical quality assessment to ensure process reliability
- Process-specific material characterization to better understand the interactions between material and forming process
- Application systems for functional and barrier coatings to enhance the functional properties of materials
Current research projects are focusing on the development of new processes, materials and machines for packaging applications. At the same time, advances in the bioeconomy are opening up new potential uses for our forming technologies in other areas of application.
