Master's in Biochemical Engineering
International Master's Program Taught in English
Expected to begin in the 2027–28 winter semester
Develop sustainable biotechnological processes for the future
How can biological systems be used for sustainable industrial processes? How can biotechnological processes be developed, optimized, and designed to conserve resources? In the English-language Master’s program in Biochemical Engineering, you’ll explore these questions and develop innovative solutions for modern biotechnological applications.
The degree program combines engineering and biotechnology to develop sustainable and innovative processes for industrial applications. You’ll deepen your knowledge in the development, analysis, modeling, and optimization of biotechnological processes and engage with current topics such as environmental sustainability, digitalization, and machine learning. The program is taught entirely in English and has an international focus. This prepares you for a globalized workforce and teaches you to solve complex biotechnology challenges using modern engineering methods.
What to Expect from the Program
The master’s program is designed for graduates of bachelor’s programs in engineering or the natural sciences who wish to deepen their knowledge in the development and optimization of biotechnological processes. The four-semester program combines required modules, elective modules, and practical research components, providing you with a well-rounded and customizable education.
Required Courses
In the required courses, you’ll deepen your knowledge of key topics such as bioprocess engineering, enzyme technology, computational bioreaction engineering, and biorefinery design. The research internship in the third semester allows you to independently address a scientific research question and prepares you for your master’s thesis.
Semi-Elective Area
In the required-elective section, you tailor your studies to your interests. For example, you can focus on the development and evaluation of biotechnological processes or the optimization of production organisms. Elective-required modules include, among others, Downstream Processing, Machine Learning in Process Engineering, Metabolic Engineering, and Biochemistry of the Cell. The program is complemented by interdisciplinary modules on topics such as sustainability and economic efficiency.
Your Career Prospects
With a master’s degree in Biochemical Engineering, you’ll be prepared for careers in the research, development, and monitoring of biotechnological manufacturing processes. You will have in-depth knowledge of the analysis, modeling, and optimization of biotechnological processes, as well as the development of sustainable processes. Career opportunities are available in fields such as industrial biotechnology, process monitoring, quality assurance, and research institutions. You can work in industry, engineering firms, government agencies, or scientific institutions. Thanks to the degree program’s international focus and the use of English as the language of instruction, a wide range of career opportunities in an international setting are also open to you. A particular focus of the degree program is on environmental sustainability. At the same time, coursework on the digitalization of engineering activities and the use of artificial intelligence prepares you for the demands of modern work environments. The master’s degree also qualifies you for a Ph.D. and paves the way for an academic career.
