Dr. phil. Regina Bergmann: Text Spaces and Spatial Texts Intermedial
Applicant: Dr. phil. Regina Bergmann, Institute of German Studies and Media Cultures, Faculty of Language, Literature, and Cultural Studies | School of Humanities and Social Sciences
Period: 28.06.2023 – 30.06.2023
Participating partners: Prof. Joanna Szczęk, University of Wrocław, Institute of Germanic Studies, Wrocław, Poland
The joint conference "Text Spaces and Spatial Texts: Intermedial" is an impressive example of a cooperation that has grown and is lived within the framework of TU Dresden's regional partnerships. It was organized by the Institute of German Studies at TU Dresden and the partner institute at the University of Wrocław, and took place in Wrocław in the summer of 2023. The conference brought together linguists, cultural scientists, and theologians from eight countries, including France, the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, and Spain, to discuss topics such as linguistic landscapes, multimodality, intercultural communication, and the relationship between space and text in literature, film, and corporate contexts, thus spanning multiple disciplines.
The partnership between the two institutes, which began in 2016, is fueled by the impressive personal dedication of Dr. Bergmann and Prof. Joanna Szczęk. Dr. Bergmann explains her motivation as follows: "Of course, this can be explained primarily by my personal political attitude, but it is also due to the fact that we have developed a strong personal connection over the years, especially with Prof. Joanna Szczęk, the head of the department. We work very well together, extending beyond our common professional interests. Cooperation between Poland and Germany has a long history, though it has always had phases and developments that resulted in negative experiences for both sides. One of the main reasons I am so committed to this cooperation is to ensure these painful situations, full of loss and tragedy, do not happen again. Because only knowledge that is acquired and shared collectively can create a sense of togetherness.“
Even after the conference concluded successfully, the joint activities continued. The scientific findings from the conference were published in a joint publication* in November 2024.
Thanks to funding from the DAAD Program for Eastern Partnerships, young researchers from both institutes were able to network. Dr. Bergmann and Prof. Szczęk also contribute to teaching and conferences at their respective partner institutes.
Overall, the partnership illustrates how professional affinity and personal dedication can foster a lasting, international academic network. The successful collaboration strengthens the academic connection between Dresden and Wrocław and actively contributes to shaping and continuing the partnership among young academics by involving students on both sides. Thus, this regional partnership exemplifies the internationalization practiced at TU Dresden.
