Best Practice Projects

The funding program internationalization is part of the excellence strategy 'TUD 2028 - Synergy and beyond' and is embeded within the EXU focus area COLLABORATION. The program aims to develop and expand international cooperation, foster ideas for campus internationalization, and increase international visibility. It enables goal-oriented internationalization activities at TU Dresden.

Between 2020 and August 2025, the program funded more than 185 projects from TU members of all schools. The approved projects cover a wide range of formats. They demonstrate how internationalization can be experienced in many ways, such as high-profile events, like summer schools and international conferences, which increase TU Dresden's visibility due to their appeal. Other projects establish and expand research collaborations worldwide. These collaborations result in joint publications on innovative research projects, the acquisition of third-party funding, and strategic exchanges of young scientists.

The following examples represent a selection of particularly successful and innovative projects that were realized with the support of the Funding Program Internationalization. As examples of best practices, they demonstrate the effectiveness, creativity, and sustainability of internationalization at TU Dresden, providing inspiration for your own projects.

Dr. Benedikter & Dr. Schusser: International Forestry Field School

The International Forestry Field School in northern Thailand provided students from TU Dresden and Kasetsart University (Thailand) with a unique, comprehensive, and intercultural learning experience in sustainable forestry. The summer school combined scientific theory with interdisciplinary, problem-oriented learning. Learn more

Bergert: Kick-Starter: International Virtual GLASSroom Community

The project "Kick-Starter" supported the development of an international community focused on the interdisciplinary field of glass design and technology. The platform enables the sharing, use and further development of high-quality educational materials. The project “Kick-Starter” served to prepare a successful project application for ERASMUS+ funding. Learn more

Dr. Bergmann: Text Spaces and Spatial Texts Intermedial

In summer 2023, the interdisciplinary conference „Text Spaces and Spatial Texts: Intermedial“ took place - a collaboration between the Institute of German Studies at TU Dresden and the University of Wrocław. Researchers from eight countries explored topics such as linguistic landscapes, multimodality, intercultural communication and the interplay between space and text. Learn more

Vollmann & Gerstenberger: Election Night – Scientific symposium on the 2024 presidential election in the USA

As part of the scientific symposium on the 2024 US presidential election at TU Dresden, around 460 guests and students participated and were given the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of transatlantic relations and the potential impact of the election. They also had the chance to network and exchange ideas with experts and representatives from politics, business, and academia. Learn more

Prof. Gude: 5. Saxon-Polish Innovation Day

The Saxon-Polish Innovation Day has been organized by the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology at TU Dresden since 2017. It brings together stakeholders from science, business, politics and society from Saxony and Lower Silesia to discuss future topics such as sustainability, mobility and digitalization. In 2023, the Innovation Day was held in Dresden for the first time. Learn more

Prof. Haberstroh: European Course of Cryogenics

The European Course of Cryogenics (ECC) is an annual, joint course organized by the Technical Universities of Dresden, Wrocław, and Trondheim. This three-week summer program rotates among the three cities each week, bringing together students from around the globe in the field of cryogenics. Learn more

Dr. Jungmann: Water sampling and workshop on “MoRe WATER”

The cooperation with the partner universities in South Africa included a sampling campaign to investigate surface waters and a joint workshop at the South African Mountain Conference (SAMC). The project is a successful model for sustainable cooperation in the Global South, developing solutions to climate challenges. Learn more

Prof. Lordick: Architectural Math for Bamboo Structures

As part of the international summer school "Architectural Math for Bamboo Structures" students and scientists led by Prof. Lordick, Ass. Prof. Abdelmagid and Dresden Fellow Dr. Elshafei combined mathematical strategies with the sustainable building material bamboo. Their collaboration resulted in the 4.5-meter-high sculpture "La Fleur Mathématique", which was presented in Pillnitz Palace Park. Learn more

Prof. Mensing-de Jong: Urban LAB Dresden 2023

In October 2023, students and teachers from Dresden, Prague, Krakow, and Strasbourg participated in an international workshop called "Urban Lab", where they developed architectural concepts for the Alberthafen/Flutrinne/Ostragehege area in Dresden. The workshop addressed common urban planning challenges, such as dealing with the urban planning legacy of socialism and flood protection. Learn more

Prof. Straßner: New Precious Metal NHC Complexes

At the Chair of Physical Organic Chemistry (OC3), working groups from TU Dresden and Charles University in Prague jointly investigated the electrochemical and photophysical properties of precious metal complexes with cyclometalated ligands. In their collaboration, the groups complemented each other with their respective expertise, learned from each other, and further strengthened their exchange. Learn more

Prof. Xie: Towards the Digital Urban Era

The international teaching format, "Towards the Digital Urban Era," brought together 82 students from 14 countries to explore the challenges and opportunities of the digital urban era. During the two-semester hybrid seminar, four universities from Japan, China, Norway, and Germany combined their expertise to enable intercultural learning across continents. Learn more

Dr. Yun: Interdisciplinary exploration of de novo thymus regeneration

Axolotls have the ability to fully regenerate not only their limbs but also their thymus, an essential organ for the human immune system. Thanks to seed funding from the Internationalization Funding Program, Dr. Yun's team was able to collect initial research data with Prof. Rene Maehr, a thymus biology expert. This data formed the basis for a successful DFG application, enabling further research. Learn more
