Internationalization at TU Dresden
Science is international. For this reason, thinking and acting internationally is decisive in the worldwide competition for students and scientists. We view it as our task to maintain teaching and research at the highest international level and to secure their continued development. Internationalisation as a long-term goal of our University is an integral element in all strategic documents, above all in the Institutional Strategy “The Synergetic University”, in our development plan and in our mission statement.
Internationality at universities has many facets. It has gained new momentum in the context of the globalization phenomenon, but was already a given before. At the beginning of the 20th century, about a quarter of the students at the then Kgl. Sächsische Technische Hochschule Dresden were of international origin. They came mainly from Russia, Austria-Hungary, Norway, Bulgaria and even the USA. Internationality is already inherent in the idea of science. The desire for knowledge has never stopped at national borders. Curiosity about the unfamiliar, interest in the other, has at some point even been the foundation of science. The rainforest projects of the forestry sciences or the geodetic work in which TU scientists are exploring the area of the Amundsen Sea with the research ship Polarstern, all these projects are intended to be international from the outset. Internationalization is not an end in itself, it is a necessity for a university and is also reflected in the vision and strategy "TUD 2022.2025" of the Extended Rectorate of TU Dresden.
