The Office for Academic Heritage, Scientific and Art Collections at TU Dresden has been involved in university anniversaries and university history projects since its foundation.
It regularly organizes events on the subject and participates in research projects. The Office's staff also regularly publish on topics related to the history of higher education and science. In recent years, the focus of activities has shifted to the material evidence of university history in the form of collections and buildings. Mobile material evidence of university history is brought together in the Collection of University History, which is managed by the Office for Academic Heritage itself. The Office furthermore oversees the Collection of Hospitality Gifts , which is closely linked to the history of the university as well.

The Office for Academic Heritage works closely with other institutions of TU Dresden researching the history of the institution. The University Archives are responsible for the acquisition, evaluation, content indexing and analysis of written and digital records worthy of archiving from all areas of TU Dresden and its predecessor institutions. The Institute of History, in particular the Chair of History of Technology and Science of Technology, and the Institute of History of Medicine conduct research into the history of schools and collections.
Numerous collections also work on the history of the scientific fields they represent, such as the Colour Research & Theory Collection on the history of color theory or the Historic Acoustic-Phonetic Collection on the history of speech synthesis.
