Diabetes Information booth at the 16th Long Night of Science
As in previous years, the Paul Langerhans Institut Dresden (PLID) took part in the Dresden Long Night of Science with its own information booth. On June 15th, almost 3000 young and old science enthusiasts visited the CRTD between 6:00 pm and 1:00 am, setting another visitor record. At the PLID booth many guests took the opportunity to inform themselves about the current research activities of scientists on type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This year, the PLID contribution comprised lectures by Prof. Stephan Speier on the topic "Transplantation, Regeneration and Stem Cells - New Research Approaches for Diabetes Therapy" and by Dr. Andreas Müller on the topic "Where does my insulin come from? The beta cell under the microscope". In addition, our guests had the opportunity to take part in a taste experiment and a "sugar quiz". In a self-produced video, visitors were able to learn more about the intracellular processes within a beta cell following stimulation with glucose or to inform themselves about the current status of the Freder1k and POInT studies. Last but not least, our guests were invited to dress up like our clean room specialists and take pictures in our photo box, thus keeping the 2018 Long Night of Science for eternity.
