Application in different quotas
At the Carl Gustav Carus Faculty of Medicine, there are approximately 56 places available each year in the first semester for the degree program in Dentistry. Places are allocated by the Foundation for University Admissions (hochschulstart) as part of the dialogue-oriented service procedure. Applications for a place on the Dentistry degree program at TU Dresden are made directly via: hochschulstart.de. Hochschulstart distributes the available study places in the so-called quota model via the following main quotas:
- Abitur quota
- Additional aptitude quota (ZEQ)
- University selection procedure quota (AdH)
Abiturbest quota: 30% of the study places are awarded to the best placed applicants in the list of applicants ranked by the foundation according to Abitur result (score).
Additional aptitude quota (ZEQ): 10% of study places are allocated within the ZEQ on the basis of a score in the following criteria:
- Result in a subject-specific aptitude test (TMS)
- Completed vocational training
- a recognized practical activity (service)
University selection procedure (AdH): 60% of the study places to be allocated based on the results in the AdH quota criteria:
- Result of the university entrance qualification (points)
- Result in a subject-specific aptitude test (TMS)
- a recognized practical activity (service)
- a recognized completed vocational training.
Here you will find the timeline of the Foundation for University Admissions. You do not have to choose one of the three main quotas in advance, as you automatically participate in all three main quotas when you apply to the Foundation.
To improve your chances of getting a place, there is the university-independent Test for Medical Degree Programs (TMS), the results of which are taken into account in the main ZEQ and AdH quotas. Information on the admission requirements and conditions of participation on the TMS website: https: //www.tms-info.org/.
TMSnat from spring 2027: It combines cognitive skills (formerly TMS) with scientific knowledge (formerly HAM-Nat).
- Transitional regulation: For the winter semester 2027/28, results from both the previous TMS and the new TMSnat will be taken into account. Applicants can submit one or both test results; the better result is automatically taken into account.
- From the winter semester 2028/29, only TMSnat results will be taken into account.
Prior to the allocation of study places in the main quotas, the so-called preliminary quotas are applied.
Allocation procedure in the preliminary quotas
According to the Saxon Rural Physicians Act, the"rural physician quota" is a preliminary quota that is awarded to applicants who would like to work in rural areas and have a great interest in working as a general practitioner.
The application and allocation is carried out by or at the State Directorate of Saxony.
Separate selection procedures are carried out for this purpose. All further information, contact persons and legal bases can be found on the website of the State Directorate of Saxony.
You can find theregulations on the implementation of the selection procedures for the allocation of study places within the quota for foreign nationals and stateless persons, insofar as they are not equivalent to Germans, in our statutes:

When applying, please ensure that you select the correct semester based on your previous course of study or the credit transfer certificate from your LPA.
Admission to the higher semester is based on Section 7 of the Saxon Higher Education Admission Act in conjunction with Section 40 of the Saxon Study Place Allocation Ordinance. If study places are available, the allocation is based on the following applicant groups:
1. upgrades
2. transfer students/ students transferring to another university
3. other applicants (lateral entry).
Within these applicant groups, the ranking list is generally determined according to previous academic achievements (completed certificates of achievement as defined by the licensing regulations). In the event of equal ranking, the place will be determined according to the average grade of the university entrance qualification (Abitur) and, secondarily, by lot.
1. upgrading:
The higher ranking requires that you have been admitted to the 1st semester of the respective degree program by the Foundation for University Admissions and that you submit a written application (informal) for higher ranking based on your academic achievements. The application for upgrading must be submitted with the acceptance for admission to the first semester and proof of the relevant academic achievements must be provided.
2. change of place of study/interruption of studies:
Applicants who are changing their place of study or interrupting their studies with academic achievements from a university in a member state of the European Union require recognition of existing study and examination achievements as well as placement in a higher semester of the desired degree program by the state examination office responsible for you.
3. other applicants (lateral entrants):
Subject and degree program changers are considered lateral entrants, as are applicants who have acquired their academic achievements at a university outside a member state of the European Union. They require recognition of existing study and examination achievements as well as placement in a higher semester of the desired degree program by the state examination office responsible for them.
If you are transferring from abroad or from a related degree program (change of specialization) to a higher semester of the degree program in Dentistry, you must contact the following offices or authorities for the recognition and transfer of study and examination credits as well as for the issuing of a certificate of credit transfer ("Anrechnungsbescheid"):

Cooperation practices/hospitation practices in dentistry
Modern forms of teaching are essential in order to optimize teaching and to take account of demographic changes and to train dentists with a high level of scientific and practical expertise. To this end, the Board of Directors of University Dentistry Dresden (UZM), in consultation with the Board of the Saxony Dental Association and the Saxon State Examination Office for Academic Health Professions, decided in 2016 to provide students with additional optional practical training and to place it in the clinical study section. Since then, a Saxony-wide network of cooperation practices has been established and supervised for this purpose.
Since the amended licensing regulations (ZApprO) came into force in the winter semester 2021/22, four-week clinical traineeships have also been introduced in dentistry, for which the university concludes contracts with so-called internship practices. The ZApprO specifies and expands the training objectives for the study of dentistry in § 1 ZApprO. In addition to the scientific and practical training, the independent and autonomous practice of dentistry and the ability for further education and training should also be training objectives. The clinical traineeship for dental students is intended to introduce them to practical dental care at an early stage of their training, without the student working independently on the patient. To this end, the dental student sits in with a dentist who is personally and professionally suitable and licensed to practice dentistry and who works on patients themselves. For this purpose, a corresponding Germany-wide network of internships with dental practices is being established.
Here you will find the registration form for participation as a cooperation AND/OR observation practice.
