CRC 1143 – Correlated Magnetism

As part of the collaborative research centre CRC 1143 - “Correlated Magnetism: From Frustration to Topology”, we are currently investigating two families of compounds with triangular or honeycomb arrangements of magnetically active cations. Specifically, we are investigating delafossites with a general composition of AMX₂ and ferrates, such as
K_2–xFe₄O_7–x(OH)_x.

The delafossites that are being investigated have an undistorted trigonal arrangement of magnetically active cations with preferential antiferromagnetic coupling. At very low temperatures, magnetic frustration is then observed because in this arrangement, not all of the neighbouring magnetic moments can simultaneously align antiparallel to one another. For ions with an effective moment of J_eff = ½ this may result in a non-singularly ordered ground state. Instead, a superposition of states with minimal energy may result which is known as a quantum spin liquid (QSL); the underlying theory was proposed by Anderson in the middle of the 1970’s. Up to now, no real compound with an unquestionably proven QSL ground state has been identified. However, within our group we have been able to prepare a material that comes closer to Anderson’s prediction than any other material so far: NaYbS₂. Besides the Yb-based delafossites, our group also focusses on Ce- and Ti-based delafossites, which are also comprehensively characterised within the CRC.

The second group of compounds investigated within our group contain a honeycomb net arrangement of magnetically active ions. With a suitable magnetic coupling, a magnetically frustrated ground state may also result. Transition metal halides such as a-RuCl₃ have been studied extensively in this regard over the last couple of years, also within the CRC. In order to tune the frustration, the interactions between the honeycomb nets play an important role and can be influenced by the structural design. In ferrates such as K_2–xFe₄O_7–x(OH)_x the honeycomb nets are connected via tetrahedral pairs that act as spacers. By varying the ions within these pairs, the coupling between the honeycomb nets can be accessed and the magnetic properties can be varied accordingly.
