FAQ - Chemistry Master - Application and Matriculation
In principle, anybody with a first qualifying university degree can apply for our program. We expect very good knowledge of chemistry in theory and practice comparable to our own bachelor’s degree program in chemistry.
Your chances are very good if you are a candidate with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from a German university. As an international applicant you have a good chance of being accepted if you hold a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, your studies lasted 8 semesters, and the proportion of non-chemical courses in your degree program was very low. In addition, we expect you to have acquired advanced theoretic and practical knowledge in all major subjects of chemistry (inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry). The proportion of laboratory practicals in your degree program should be at least 30%.
Chances are low for international applicants if you hold a bachelor’s degree in chemistry with only 6 semesters of study, or with a larger proportion of non-chemical courses, or with less than 30% laboratory work. Your chances of admission are slightly higher if you have an additional master’s degree in chemistry.
If you are an international candidate with a bachelor's degree in other fields such as pharmacy, chemical engineering, forensics, or medicine, you are not eligible for admission. In this case, please refrain from applying.
Yes, in any case you must present a certificate that is no more than one year old and has been issued by IELTS (at least 6,0 in every subject), TOEFL (at least 18 points in every sub-aspect, at least 75 points in sum) or UniCert (at least level II). Applicants with lower proficiency levels are not eligible for admission. Other letters of confirmation, such as MOI letters from your previous university, are not sufficient and will not be accepted as proof of language proficiency.
For international citizens with a qualifying degree from outside the European Union, applications for the winter intake are open from April 1 to May 31. The application period for the summer intake runs from October 1 to November 30.
For EU-citizens and international students with a qualifying degree from the EU and German citizens with a qualifying degree from outside the EU, application deadlines are July 15 and January 15 instead.
